At Family Furniture Co, we take great pride in each and every unique piece of furniture we sell.

Our furniture is handcrafted, built with solid wood, and professionally finished by our team

Given the handmade and organic nature of the products we craft, variations and imperfections in the wood should be expected and celebrated! Just as every tree is unique, so too is every piece of furniture that is handcrafted and finished just for you.

Wood + Stain Variations

Every piece of furniture will have a unique grain pattern and slight color variation.. These characteristics are a natural result of the wood’s organic properties and contribute to its uniqueness. We cannot guarantee exact stain matches to other tables we've done in the past. Wood is an organic material and each piece interacts with stain in its own way, which may result in slight color differences. We cannot control it.

While we apply the correct stain or paint color requested for your order, there is a possibility that the final color may vary slightly from the reference table or image you had in mind when placing your order. This is normal. We are unable to  rework the finishing on your table to get a perfect match.

Matching Stain Colors

We do NOT match stain colors off of photos. To achieve any custom stain match, you must provide the stain yourself or supply a physical sample for color matching, along with the specific type of wood you want to use.

All wood types receive stains differently. If you bring us the stain and tell us which wood to use, we will do what you've asked, however - we cannot rework staining that does not match your exact expectations. Why? Because - every piece of wood has a unique grain pattern and there will always be slight color variations.

By requesting a stain match, you acknowledge that you understand there will always be some degree of color variation, and a 100% perfect match is not guaranteed.

Sanding + Stain Colors

The finer finish you would like for your table, the lighter your stain will be. The more that your table is distressed, the darker your stain will be. Why? Because wood has pores and as wood is finely sanded, the pores shut off - allowing less stain into the wood - resulting in a lighter color. If you choose to have your furniture distressed, generally it means that the pores of the wood are still open (since it hasn't been finely sanded) and it will accept the stain darker.

If you are ordering your finely finished table based on a photo of a heavily distressed table and you want the same stain, please know that the stain is going to look different on your finely finished, non-distressed table.

General Variations in Furniture

Wood is an organic product that is prone to change in its environment. Temperature, light exposure, humidity, and other factors may cause slight changes to the wood.

Variations in solid wood are to be expected. Solid wood furniture can include open knots, visible brush strokes, micro-imperfections and textural variations in the durable, hand brushed finishes, unique distress marks, exposed screws, wood filler marks, joint lines, and distinctive nicks, splits, cracks, and other imperfections.

We allow up to approximately 1" of variation across all measurements due to the custom nature of the handcrafted furniture we build.

Those who do not appreciate variations and imperfections should not purchase handcrafted furniture.

Solid wood may expand and contract due to changes in temperature and humidity.

Throughout seasonal humidity changes, you may notice and feel a small seam in between the boards on your table. A small amount of this is normal because wood acts like a sponge and expands/contracts throughout the year.

You may also notice up to 1/8" movement in length/width/thickness in your furniture as well. Throughout the seasons the table top may also incur a minor bow/flex due to the nature of wood movement. This is all normal with solid wood furniture. If you notice a significant amount of wood movement that may seem abnormal, reach out to our team and we will discuss what is normal vs. what requires repair.

You will still see the beautiful and natural open knots on jointed table tops. We do not offer machine-manufactured perfection - no two pieces are exactly alike since Family Furniture Co furniture is crafted to your order specifications.

Over time, prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to changes in the color and stain of wood. Sunlight can cause the wood to fade, darken, or lighten depending on the wood type. Use curtains or blinds to reduce the amount of direct sunlight reaching the table. Occasionally rotate the items placed on your wood furniture to allow a more uniform color to develop. Expose table leaves to the same amount of air and sunlight as your table.

It is important to note that most of our chairs are not made out of the same wood species as your table. This means that a variation in grain pattern and stain is to be expected. We will do what we can to make them match as closely as possible, but different wood types accept stains differently.

We celebrate the true uniqueness of every piece of solid wood furniture that is built and finished by hand in our wood shop. We hope that you will as well.

If You Want to Make Changes to Your Order

If you want to make changes to your order, we must be notified of these changes within 72 hours after the order is placed. Otherwise, there is a chance we have already begun on your items and it is a waste of material and labor to do something different. We are not guaranteed to grant requests made to an order after the 72-hour mark unless previously agreed upon when placing your order.

Caring for Your Furniture

Proper maintenance is important for keeping your furniture in the best quality. To ensure your product can last a lifetime, we recommend avoiding extreme temperatures and maintaining a neutral environment for your furniture. Caring for your furniture will preserve its beauty and extend its lifetime.

Our products are not designed to take extreme heat. To protect your furniture from damage, we advise using coasters, hot pads, and placemats to guard your furniture. In general, if an item is hot to your touch, it should not be placed directly on your solid wood surface.

We do not recommend using any harsh chemical cleaners on your furniture.

To clean your furniture, we recommend using an all-natural cleaner (like a thieves cleaner) or a sponge with warm water and then wiping it dry after.

Lead Times

With your order, you were given a lead time. With over 50+ orders in our queue at any given time, lead times are PURELY ESTIMATES

We have been known to get orders complete and to customers before the estimated lead time given and there have also been issues that have happened in production that delayed orders beyond lead times. The lead time that we have given you is our best guess at when you will get your table.

It's better to get it a few weeks later than quoted and it is up to quality standards since you plan to have it for years to come rather than it is to get it on time and it fails quality standards. We cannot guarantee a specific delivery date

Please know this if you're placing an order with us in hopes of getting it for a special occasion such as a party, birthday, holiday, etc... We will always do our best to accommodate, but we cannot guarantee anything in terms of the delivery date. Please understand this before placing an order with us.

When Your Furniture is Complete

Our team will be in communication with you to discuss the completion of your furniture. When your furniture is complete, a delivery or pickup timeframe will be determined. If you selected your order to be delivered, delivery dates are weather-dependent as we do not have an enclosed trailer for deliveries.

Delivery rates are determined based on the distance to the delivery location. The delivery driver will need 1 additional person to assist in unloading and carrying into your home. If an additional person cannot assist in unloading, an additional fee will be charged to send an additional delivery person.

Should the customer fail to pick up their furniture order within 15 days of notification of availability, a warehousing fee of $25 per week will be incurred until the order is collected. Family Furniture Co reserves the right to dispose of the items or use them at their discretion after 90 days of continued non-collection, with no liability for loss or damage.

Policies on Warranty, Delivery, Product Variation, + Communication

Our Warranty

Our warranty covers craftsmanship defects in regards to products not functioning correctly. Example - Joints in the wood of the product are insecure or wobbly or wood is coming apart or breaking naturally.

What our warranty does not cover: anything that has occurred due to mishandling of furniture, such as damaging the finish, force to the wood causing it to break, or natural tendencies of wood when treated to extreme humidity & temperature changes (Twisting, bowing, warping). Wood is a natural product and we have no control over it moving over time, especially in different temperatures and humidity.

Product Variation

Distressing

The majority of the furniture we make can be distressed. We do this all by hand, meaning that no two points of distress will look the same. This is normal and to be celebrated, and there will not be any refunds given for the distressing not matching or for the level of distressing not being what was expected by the customer when the order was placed. We do not heavily distress anything unless it is asked for by the customer. Please view our photos to get an idea of how we distress our furniture before placing the order.

Stain Variation

All wood accepts stains differently. We, unfortunately, don't have ultimate control over how the wood will accept the stain you choose. We do offer different types of wood for many of our products. We cannot guarantee that your product will look exactly like a product on our website or an example that you've shown us. That's part of the beauty of custom furniture though, as there will never be another item made just like yours. These differences are inherent, oftentimes unavoidable, and should not be considered defective. There will be no refunds given or rework done for the color of the product being slightly different than expected. With that being said, we strive to always do our very best to match your expectations.

Communication

Importance of Notes:

When you place your order here on the website, there is a place to leave special notes for us. If we've communicated via phone, text, facebook, or any other place about special/custom things regarding your furniture, these things MUST be included in the notes section. With 20-40 orders passing through our shop each month, we will not remember something that was said in passing on a phone call or in a text message. Please help us help you by doing this.

For example: You messaged us on facebook asking if we could build a different style table top for your table than our standard table top design. We say that we can do it, but it is never confirmed by you that it is in fact what you want. You place your order and don't leave any notes. We get to your order and build the top as we normally do, because there are no notes to tell us otherwise. You come to pick up the table and it's not what you thought, but there was a breakdown in communication. If there had been notes on the order that simply said "Would like the different style table top that we spoke about and sent a picture of on facebook. Please see that message when beginning production", then we would have referred back to our conversation when we began building your table.

If you don't want your table distressed or you want a special paint color, it MUST be included in the notes during checkout.

This saves us all from being frustrated by the product not being what we had thought (both on our end and on your end.)

Please note that we cannot rework your furniture because of this. If there are special details they MUST be placed in the notes section. We will not be held liable to ideas that were mentioned in passing and never written down.

Stain + Paint Colors

This must be determined at the time the order is placed and if it is something different than our standard options, must be placed in the notes so we know exactly what to do.

If You Want to Make Changes to Your Order

If you want to make changes to your order, we must be notified of these changes within 72 hours after the order is placed. Otherwise, there is a chance we have already begun on your items and it is a waste of material and labor to do something different. We will not grant requests made to an order after the 72-hour mark.
